Biography

Ian Woo joined the Goyette, Ruano & Thompson team in January 2019, after earning a bachelor’s degree in political science from University of San Diego 2014 and his Juris Doctorate from University of the Pacific McGeorge School of Law 2018.

Ian was born in San Francisco and was raised in Orinda, CA, in the East Bay. Outside of work, Ian’s passions include creating wheel thrown ceramic art – such as mugs, bowls, vases, and teapots – locally at a studio in Sacramento, a practice he started in 2010.

Legal Expertise

His primary area of practice is in employment law, specifically, license defense with registered nurses and police officers. Ian Woo represents registered nurses before their licensing agency, the Board of Registered Nursing, defending them against accusations and providing disclosure services for when they need to notify the Board of a conviction as an already licensed nurse or on an application.

He also assists peace officers though internal investigation interviews by ensuring that their rights given under the Peace Officer Bill of Rights are not violated.

In addition, Ian is experienced in contract analysis and drafting, which involves communicating with clients to gain perspective of their objectives in a transactional sense then working though their contracts to tailor the language to suit their needs. As a part of this work, Ian both works though redlining contracts already provided by other parties to my clients and drafting contracts from scratch and have drafted a wide variety of contracts from service agreements to phantom stock agreements.

When asked his favorite part of his work, Ian says, “I enjoy the client interaction and communication. I appreciate the time it takes to build a rapport with clientele and learn about their lives/situations. I also enjoy any opportunity to learn the ever-evolving law and policies. Working in the transactional sector gives me time to research statutes and occasionally grapple with the tax codes which I thoroughly enjoy.”

Additional Experience

  • Tax Intern at Board of Equalization
  • Small Business Clinic at McGeorge School of Law
